Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Cecelia Fuller (softball) and Jacob MacPhee (boys basketball) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for March 2024.

Cecelia Fuller is a junior at MSHS and has been an instrumental leader on the much-improved MSHS Varsity Softball Team.

With the 2024 season marking Cece’s third as a member of the softball program, both she and her teammates are seeing their hard work and dedication pay off with a 7-3 start to the season, including a 4-0 showing at the Spring Swing Tournament that was held at the NMU Superior Dome in March.

In 31 plate appearances through 10 games this season, Cece has a batting average of .591 to go along with an on-base percentage of .710.  She has accumulated 13 hits, including 7 singles, 2 doubles, 3 triples and 1 home run to go along with 17 RBIs. As a pitcher, Cece has thrown 17.1 innings over 7 games (5 starts) for a 2-1 record.  During that time, she has a 2.019 ERA with 21 strikeouts.

In the classroom, Cece owns an impressive cumulative GPA of 3.86 and is a member of both the honor roll and National Honor Society. In addition to softball, Cece is also a three-year member of the MSHS Volleyball program with 2023 serving as her first on the varsity team.  This past winter, Cece was a regular volunteer at the concession stand during basketball games where she and her junior classmates raised funds for prom and other class initiatives.

Although still a year away, Cece has post-graduation plans to attend Michigan State University to study on a pre-law or pre-medicine track while also having an interest in a Spanish minor.


Jacob MacPhee is of junior class standing and elevated his game during his second season on the MSHS Varsity Boys Basketball Team to become one of the premier players in the region.

After the team went into the holiday break with a 3-3 record, Jacob and his teammates entered the new year with a renewed focus as they rattled off 17 straight victories en route to claiming the 2023-2024 Great Northern Conference (GNC) title outright with a perfect 8-0 mark.

Jacob’s on and off-court contributions to the team’s success this season can not be overstated as he turned in averages of 17.1 points, 13.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in addition to being a team captain. It came as no surprise when he was named as the GNC’s “Player of the Year” and earned a spot on the All-U.P. “Dream Team”.

Jacob’s success this basketball season is mirrored in the other seasons of his athletics participation as a member of the MSHS Football and Track & Field teams. On the football field this past season, he earned All-Big North Conference First Team and All-U.P. Honorable Mention accolades as a tight end. On the track, Jacob is the defending GNC champion in the 400 Meters and earned All-State and All-U.P. honors as a sophomore last season.

In the classroom, Jacob owns a 3.17 cumulative GPA to regularly place him on the honor roll. He is also a three-year member of the MSHS Orchestra. With a year remaining to solidify a decision on future plans, Jacob plans to continue his academic and athletic career in college while pursuing a degree in exercise science.

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Kyley Elmblad (girls basketball) and Sam Dehlin (boys alpine skiing) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for February 2024.

Kyley Elmblad is a member of the graduating Class of 2024 and recently completed her fourth and final season as a member of the MSHS Girls Basketball program.

As one of just two seniors on this year’s Varsity Girls Basketball team, Kyley served as a team captain and assumed a leadership role within a young team that demonstrated significant development over the course of the 2023-2024 season.

Through 21 games this season, Kyley averaged 14.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 45.6% from the field to lead the team.  In the team’s regular season finale vs. Escanaba, Kyley had an outstanding performance and poured in 28 points during the Sentinels’ win on senior night.  Although postseason accolades are still in the process of being awarded, Kyley has already been named to the All-Great Northern Conference First Team as well as earning an invitation to play in the Kiwanis Border Bash (Northern Michigan All-Stars vs. Northern Wisconsin All-Stars) to be played in June 2024.

In Summer 2023, Kyley played for Team 1848 17-U AAU girls basketball team in Wisconsin where she was named as the team’s Most Improved Player.  Outside of the basketball season, Kyley has been a three-year member of the MSHS Volleyball program and also contributes time as one of the editors of the 2023-2024 MSHS Yearbook.

In the classroom, Kyley owns a 3.70 cumulative GPA to make her a regular fixture on the honor roll.  Kyley’s post-graduation plans are to plan to attend Ripon College in the Fall of 2024 where she will continue her basketball career playing on the Redhawks women’s basketball team while pursuing a degree in Sports Medicine/Physical Therapy.

Sam Dehlin is a junior at MSHS and the 2023-2024 winter season marked his third as a member of the boys alpine skiing team.

In three seasons spent as a member of the ski team, Sam already has accumulated a long list of championships and accolades.  At the 2024 MHSAA Division 1 State Finals, Sam earned his first individual state title by placing first in the Slalom.  He was also the state runner-up in the Giant Slalom (GS).  Those finishes earned Sam All-State honors in each discipline to go along with All-Region accolades (after placing second in both Slalom and GS at the 2024 MHSAA Regional Meet) and Upper Peninsula championships in Slalom and GS for the 2023-2024 season.  He was also named to this year’s Academic All-State Team by the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association (MHSSCA).

This season’s results make Sam a six-time All-State honoree (one state title, two runner-up finishes), six-time All-Region honoree and a four-time U.P. champion.  In addition, he was also the individual champion at the 2023 Eastern High School Championships in Mittershill, NH.

In addition to skiing, Sam has been a three-year member of the football program, two-year member of the boys tennis team and participated on the boys track & field team in his freshman year.  Academically, he holds a 4.08 cumulative GPA and is a member of the honor roll and National Honor Society.

2024 Spring Sport Registration Process

  1. The spring sports registration page is now active at this link.  All students participating in a fall sport will need to complete their registration before he/she is eligible to compete.  Through the registration page, parents will be able to take care of pay-to-play fees online.
  2. MHSAA Physical Forms are available both in the high school office and by clicking here.  A physical exam conducted on/after April 15, 2023 is required for all students participating in a fall sports.  Students will not be able to begin formal practice activity until this form has been submitted to the Athletics Office.  Students with a physical already on file as a result of participating in a fall and/or winter sport do not need to submit a new copy.

Callie Tonella and Dasan Smith Selected As January Student-Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Callie Tonella (dance team) and Dasan Smith (wrestling) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for January 2024.

Callie Tonella is a member of the graduating Class of 2024 and is currently participating as a member of the MSHS Dance Team.

Throughout her time at MSHS, Callie has not only demonstrated the student-athlete experience as a multi-sport athlete with high academic achievement, but she has also been a servant leader for her peers in extracurricular organizations.

Callie is one of four seniors on this year’s Dance Team that, aside from regularly performing at home events and hosting biannual “Not Just A Halftime Show” events to bring together the dance community within Marquette, had the unique opportunity to travel to Tampa, Florida over the holiday break to take part in the Just For Kix Reliaquest Bowl Performance Tour. As part of the tour, the team represented MSHS by performing in both pregame and halftime shows at the Reliaquest Bowl held at Raymond James Stadium. As a multi-sport student-athlete at MSHS, Callie has also been a three-year member of the MSHS Girls Soccer program.

Outside of athletics, Callie has been a prominent voice among her peers within the MSHS student body by serving as Student Representative to the MAPS Board of Education and Ombudsman for the Student Council. In both roles, Callie has effectively represented the voices of her constituents during the MSHS nickname selection and rebranding processes.

Callie’s dedication extends to the classroom as well, where she holds a 3.68 cumulative GPA and is a member of both the National Honor Society and MSHS Honor Roll. After graduating from MSHS this spring, Callie will be …

Dasan Smith is of senior class standing and is currently competing in his second season of the MSHS Wrestling program.

After Dasan’s junior year on the mat saw him advance to Ford Field as an MHSAA State Finals qualifier as a result of finishing second at the MHSAA Regional meet and third at the MHSAA District meet, he is once again turning in podium finishes at events in the 2023-24 campaign.

After finishing with a perfect 4-0 record at the Westwood Super Dual on 12/9/23, he went on to finish third at the New  Lothrop Hall of Fame Tournament (1/6/24) and second at the U.P. Championships (1/20/24). In addition to his individual results, Dasan has been instrumental in leading the team and his peers which paid off when the group captured the team title at the Marquette County Meet on 1/11/24.

In addition to wrestling, Dasan has been a two-year Varsity Football standout and ended his prep career as one of the most decorated players in school history after being selected MHSFCA All-State First Team (2023), AP All-State First Team (2023), MHSFCA All-Region First Team (2023, 2022), U.P. “Lineman of the Year” (2023, 2022), U.P. “Dream Team” (2023, 2022) and All-Conference First Team (2023, 2022). He capped his high school career in December when he participated in the 2023 Blue-Grey All-American Bowl held at AT&T Stadium.

Dasan’s desire to succeed athletically this year has been matched by his effort in the classroom where he turned in a 3.11 GPA for the first semester to earn him a place on the MSHS Honor Roll. Outside of school, Dasan plays an active role in promoting Native American culture as a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. In December 2023, Dasan finalized his post-graduation plans when he signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to attend Central Michigan University and compete as a member of the Chippewas football team.

On Wednesday afternoon (2/7/24), three senior student-athletes from the MSHS Class of 2024 signed National Letters of Intent to solidify their decisions on the institutions they will attend and compete for beginning with the Fall 2024 semester.

Family members, friends, coaches and staff were on-hand as student-athletes were introduced before declaring their decided upon colleges/universities.

Wyatt Lakenen (football – University of Wisconsin-Platteville)

  • Why Wyatt Chose UW-Platteville:  “I chose the University of Platteville for a variety of reasons. First, they will allow me to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. I have always gravitated towards projects that involved designing and building things. This sparked my interest and was the launch pad for my interest in engineering. Second of all was the coaching staff, who saw my potential from day one. I went to their summer camp in July and they immediately showed interest. They offered me right after the camp. Coach Allender and Coach Munz have shown excitement about my potential and what I could bring to their team. With this being said, I would not have been in the position I am in without the support of my parents and coaches. My parents have supported me this whole way by truly believing in me and showing their love no matter how I played. I would not be here without them. Coach Mason has also done remarkable things for me, for example, bringing me to Brighton to have the opportunity to get scouted. From the first day, Coach Mason has believed in me and my ability so I couldn’t thank him enough. And yes Coach Ledy has shown me how to become mentally tough and pushes me to become the person and player that he believes I can be. Lastly, Coach Marr has always coached me with strict positivity. In my years of running track, I still have not heard a negative thing come out of his mouth. In conclusion, I am beyond thankful for every single person who has helped me along this journey. I am excited for this next chapter of my life and strive to develop as a person.”

  • Why Abby Chose Northern Michigan University:  “I chose NMU because it is an excellent school and I love our community. I am honored to represent my hometown and to be a Lady Wildcat. My father played on Northern’s Golf Team, and my brother is currently a Wildcat Golfer. I am happy to follow in their footsteps. Finally, the coaches are exceptional people, and I am honored to be joining a team of great women.”

 

 

 

 

Tucker Welch (football – Northern Michigan University)

  • Why Tucker Chose Northern Michigan University:  “I chose Northern Michigan University because of the opportunities it provides me both academically and athletically. I am very grateful and honored that I can continue my education while playing football at Northern. Northern has one of the top Construction Management Programs in the country and I am excited about the great opportunities after receiving a college degree. The NMU football program competes in one of the most competitive Division II conferences in the nation. I am excited to be a part of the rebuilding process of Northern’s football team and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. The coaching staff at Northern also played a big part in my decision. From early on I could see how dedicated the coaches are in making the team better and making their players better. Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Elena Henry (girls swimming & diving) and Tucker Welch (ice hockey) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for December 2023.

Elena Henry Elena is part of this year’s senior class at MSHS and is a four-year member of the MSHS Girls Swimming & Diving program.

For the past four years, Elena has and continues to be a key member of the MSHS Girls Swim & Dive Team. She brings valuable experience to this year’s team after having been part of two MHSAA U.P. Championship teams (2022-23, 2021-22) and one MHSAA U.P. Runner-Up team (2020-21). With already having turned in multiple MHSAA U.P. Finals qualifying times this season, Elena is looking to cap her impressive career that already has her as a three-time All-U.P. Team honoree and two-time U.P. Champion (2022-23; 200 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay). In all, she comes into this season as a 10-time medalist at the MHSAA U.P. Swimming & Diving Finals.

In the classroom, Elena owns an impressive cumulative GPA of 4.07 and is a member of both the honor roll and National Honor Society.  Outside of school, Elena performs as a member of the MSHS Symphony Orchestra where she earned the Outstanding Soloist Award at the 2023 Solo & Ensemble Festival.  She also serves as director of the “Lauri’s Angels” gift drive at MSHS and volunteers at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans.  To round things out, Elena was named MSHS “Student of the Week” for November 27-December 1 and previously represented MSHS at the 2023 MHSAA Sportsmanship Summit.

Upon graduating from MSHS, Elena plans on attending Northern Michigan University beginning in Fall 2024 to pursue a degree in Biology on either the Pre-Medicine or Pre-Dental track.

Tucker Welch  is of senior class standing and currently serves as an assistant captain on the 2023-2024 MSHS Varsity Hockey Team.

As one of the leaders on this year’s varsity hockey team, Tucker has been instrumental in helping the team to a 10-2-0 overall record, including a 4-1-0 mark in the Great Lakes Hockey Conference, that has Marquette currently ranked 5th among MHSAA Division 3 schools according to Michigan Hockey Hub. In 12 games this season, Tucker has accumulated 4 goals and 3 assists for 7 points.

In addition to hockey, Tucker also assumed a leadership role as a captain on the 2023 MSHS Varsity Football Team. His work ethic helped the team to a 5-4 overall record (5-1 Big North Conference) and berth in the 2023 MHSAA Division 3 Playoffs. As a running back, he turned in 787 yards and 8 touchdowns off of 127 carries to earn All-U.P. Special Mention and All-Big North Conference Second Team accolades. He was also selected as MSHS’ “Offensive Player of the Year”.

In the classroom, Tucker owns a 3.60 cumulative GPA for a regular spot on the honor roll and active membership in the National Honor Society. Outside of school, Tucker also enjoys fishing as well as volunteering time with Special Olympics powerlifting. Tucker’s post-graduation plans are to continue his athletics career at a college/university that has yet to be decided on while pursuing a degree in Construction Management.

Abby Harma (women’s cross country, women’s track & field – Northern Michigan University)

  • Why Abby Chose Northern Michigan University:  “I chose Northern because I love the community for endurance sports here in Marquette and the outdoor resources here that make running all the more enjoyable. I love where the team is at and the goals they have for the future and I want to be a part of those amazing goals and aspirations. I have fallen in love with Marquette and the lake, forests, and people here and am excited to be spending my next four years as a wildcat with an incredible group of women. Jenny Ryan and Paige DuBois are truly inspiring and motivating people and I am so excited to have two incredible
    influential women be my coaches and role models for me as I compete at a higher level.”

 

Dasan Smith (football – Central Michigan University)

  • Why Dasan Chose Central Michigan University:  “I chose Central Michigan for many reasons. One of the reasons is its close proximity to home which is very important to me. CMU also has a small campus feel to make it easy to navigate and get involved.The Exercise Science program at CMU will offer me a quality education and degree while also having a high graduation success rate for its students. As a football program, CMU is a team that is always in contention for the MAC title. In addition, competing at the NCAA Division I level will give me the most competitive and challenging collegiate football journey. Going to Central has the potential to be a stepping stone to make it to the NFL which is a big dream of mine. I would like to thank the coaches and staff at CMU for giving me this opportunity to make my dreams come true. I can’t wait to what the future holds for me at CMU.”

Jessica Gooch and Kaleb Chipelewski Selected As November Student-Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Jessica Gooch (volleyball) and Kaleb Chipelewski (boys soccer) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for November 2023.

Jessica Gooch is a member of the Class of 2024 at MSHS and has just completed her senior season as captain of the MSHS Varsity Volleyball team.

In two years of experience as a middle blocker, Jessica has certainly left her mark on the MSHS Volleyball program. This season, Jessica helped lead the team to a 21-13-2 overall record as well as a 6-2 mark in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) that included a 2nd place finish at the Marquette Invite (9/23/23) and Silver Division Championship at the Bay City Mitten Bay Classic (9/9/23). On the year, Jessica was the team leader in blocks (60) and hitting consistency (.258 attack percentage) while being second on the team in kills (151).

Jessica’s high-level performance during her junior and senior seasons earned her All-GNC First Team and All-Region honors from the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association during each of those campaigns. She was also named as the team’s Most Improved Player during the 2022 season.

Jessica is a two-sport varsity student-athlete and is looking forward to her third year as a member of the MSHS Varsity Girls Soccer team this spring. In the classroom, she owns a 3.26 cumulative GPA and has been a regular fixture on the honor roll.

Upon graduating from MSHS, Jessica plans on attending Northern Michigan University beginning in Fall 2024 to pursue a degree in Sports Science and Athletic Training.

Kaleb Chipelewski is a junior at MSHS and was a member of this year’s MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer team.

The 2023 boys soccer season saw Kaleb assume a veteran leadership role as it marked his third as a member of the varsity team. After claiming U.P. Championships as a freshman and sophomore, both he and the team were eager to take the program to new heights with MHSAA postseason eligibility being restored for the 2023 soccer season.

That goal was accomplished after the team turned in an overall record of 13-5 on the season, which included capturing a 2023 MHSAA Division 2 District title after defeating Petoskey in a thrilling 11-round shootout. On the year, Kaleb accumulated 21 goals (6th in state), 9 assists (16th in state) for 51 points (8th in state). Kaleb’s play saw him recognized by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association (MIHSSCA) with All-State Honorable Mention, All-Region and All-District team accolades.

In addition to soccer, Kaleb has been a two-year member of both the boys basketball and boys golf programs. During the 2023 boys golf season, Kaleb placed 2nd at the Great Northern Conference Championships while also finishing 4th at the MHSAA U.P. Golf Finals.

In the classroom, Kaleb owns a 4.08 cumulative GPA to put him as a three-year inclusion on the honor roll and member of the National Honor Society. He also serves as a junior class representative on the MSHS Student Council and member of the MSHS Newspaper Club.

The 2023 All-Upper Peninsula Football Awards were announced on Monday (November 13) and MSHS had eight total student-athletes receive honors from the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association for their play on the field this season.

In all, Marquette had two on the All-U.P. “Dream Team”, one on the All-U.P. First Team, three receive Special Mention and two receive Honorable Mention.  In addition, senior offensive lineman Dasan Smith was named as the 2023 Mitchell Snyder U.P. On Tuesday (11/14/23), the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association (UPSSA) voted and released the inaugural All-Upper Peninsula Volleyball Teams, which were for the 2023 season.  MSHS had two student-athletes honored as part of the awards with junior Jaylee Dellies being named to the All-U.P. “Dream Team” and junior Ava Maki receiving All-U.P.
