Grace Sobczak and Andrew King Selected As February Student-Athletes Of The Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Grace Sobczak (girls swim & dive) and Andrew King (boys swim & dive) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for February 2023.

Grace Sobczak is a junior at MSHS this year and has just finished her third year as a member of the MSHS Girls Swimming & Diving team.

The 2022-2023 swimming and diving season was a remarkable season for both the team, as the Redettes won the MHSAA U.P. Swimming & Diving title, and for Grace as she captured four first place finishes at this year’s finals (200 Medley Relay, 200 I.M., 500 Free, 400 Free Relay). Those results earned Grace All-Upper Peninsula honors for the third consecutive season and also saw her recognized by the MHSAA as the “Performance of the Week”.

The team championship is the team’s second straight and fourth MHSAA U.P. Finals title in five seasons. For Grace, she has now accumulated eight total first place finishes at the MHSAA U.P. Finals after winning two events in both 2022 (200 Medley Relay, 500 Free) and 2021 (500 Free, 200 Free Relay).

Academically, Grace holds a 3.76 cumulative GPA which has her included on the MSHS Honor Roll, French Honor Roll as well as membership in the National Honor Society. Grace is a three-sport student-athlete at MSHS and also participates in the cross country and track & field programs.

Although still a year away, Grace is intending on continuing her education after graduating from MSHS and pursuing collegiate swimming opportunities.

Andrew King is a Class of 2023 senior has just wrapped-up an outstanding four-year career on the MSHS Boys Swimming & Diving team.

For the past four years, Andrew has been a key member of a talented group of seniors within the swimming & diving program. His talent, hard work and dedication, along with that of his teammates, has resulted in four consecutive MHSAA U.P. Swimming & Diving championships.

At the 2023 MHSAA U.P. Finals meet, Andrew earned three individual titles (200 Medley Relay, 100 Back, 400 Free Relay) to help the team distance themselves from the competition. In all, Andrew has earned seven total individual U.P. titles after earning three in 2022 (200 Medley Relay, 100 Back, 400 Free Relay) and one in 2021 (200 Medley Relay). Those results have allowed him to be a three-time member of the All-U.P. team over the course of his career.

In the classroom, Andrew owns an impressive 4.26 cumulative GPA to make him an Excellence in Education student and member of the National Honor Society. In addition to swimming, Andrew also participates as a member of the MSHS Varsity Boys Tennis team and Disc Golf Club.

Andrew’s post-graduation plans are to continue his education at a college/university yet to be determined, while pursuing a degree in Fish and Wildlife Management as well as collegiate swimming opportunities.
