Callie Tonella and Dasan Smith Selected As January Student-Athletes of the Month

Callie Tonella and Dasan Smith Selected As January Student-Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Callie Tonella (dance team) and Dasan Smith (wrestling) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for January 2024.

Callie Tonella is a member of the graduating Class of 2024 and is currently participating as a member of the MSHS Dance Team.

Throughout her time at MSHS, Callie has not only demonstrated the student-athlete experience as a multi-sport athlete with high academic achievement, but she has also been a servant leader for her peers in extracurricular organizations.

Callie is one of four seniors on this year’s Dance Team that, aside from regularly performing at home events and hosting biannual “Not Just A Halftime Show” events to bring together the dance community within Marquette, had the unique opportunity to travel to Tampa, Florida over the holiday break to take part in the Just For Kix Reliaquest Bowl Performance Tour. As part of the tour, the team represented MSHS by performing in both pregame and halftime shows at the Reliaquest Bowl held at Raymond James Stadium. As a multi-sport student-athlete at MSHS, Callie has also been a three-year member of the MSHS Girls Soccer program.

Outside of athletics, Callie has been a prominent voice among her peers within the MSHS student body by serving as Student Representative to the MAPS Board of Education and Ombudsman for the Student Council. In both roles, Callie has effectively represented the voices of her constituents during the MSHS nickname selection and rebranding processes.

Callie’s dedication extends to the classroom as well, where she holds a 3.68 cumulative GPA and is a member of both the National Honor Society and MSHS Honor Roll. After graduating from MSHS this spring, Callie will be …

Dasan Smith is of senior class standing and is currently competing in his second season of the MSHS Wrestling program.

After Dasan’s junior year on the mat saw him advance to Ford Field as an MHSAA State Finals qualifier as a result of finishing second at the MHSAA Regional meet and third at the MHSAA District meet, he is once again turning in podium finishes at events in the 2023-24 campaign.

After finishing with a perfect 4-0 record at the Westwood Super Dual on 12/9/23, he went on to finish third at the New  Lothrop Hall of Fame Tournament (1/6/24) and second at the U.P. Championships (1/20/24). In addition to his individual results, Dasan has been instrumental in leading the team and his peers which paid off when the group captured the team title at the Marquette County Meet on 1/11/24.

In addition to wrestling, Dasan has been a two-year Varsity Football standout and ended his prep career as one of the most decorated players in school history after being selected MHSFCA All-State First Team (2023), AP All-State First Team (2023), MHSFCA All-Region First Team (2023, 2022), U.P. “Lineman of the Year” (2023, 2022), U.P. “Dream Team” (2023, 2022) and All-Conference First Team (2023, 2022). He capped his high school career in December when he participated in the 2023 Blue-Grey All-American Bowl held at AT&T Stadium.

Dasan’s desire to succeed athletically this year has been matched by his effort in the classroom where he turned in a 3.11 GPA for the first semester to earn him a place on the MSHS Honor Roll. Outside of school, Dasan plays an active role in promoting Native American culture as a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. In December 2023, Dasan finalized his post-graduation plans when he signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to attend Central Michigan University and compete as a member of the Chippewas football team.

Isabella DeMattia and David Eberhard Selected As March Student-Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Isabella DeMattia (dance team) and David Eberhard (boys basketball) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for March 2022.

Isabella DeMattia is a senior at MSHS and just capped a successful four-year career on the MSHS Dance Team, where she was team captain for the 2021-22 season.

Bella began dance at the age of three and entered competitive dance at eleven years old attending Studio Dance Arts. At age thirteen, Bella was invited to a summer intensive camp at the Elite Interlochen Center for the Arts selection program where she was chosen to join an intensive camp for ballet study. Her experience includes both solo and group performances in Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop, Pom, Kick, Modern and Lyrical. She has also choreographed many routines over the years and assisted at Studio Dance Arts with young beginning dancers. Bella’s highest solo achievement was placing second overall against 57 competitors at the Rainbow Dance Competition.

During her four-year career on the MSHS Dance Team, Bella was a member of the 2020 team that placed first at the Just For Kix Competition and was selected to perform at the Raymond James Stadium 2020 New Years’ Day Outback Bowl halftime performance in Tampa, Florida.  The team was ultimately selected as front row dancers, leading the performance with upwards of 1,000 dancers.

Bella has also been a standout academically, where she owns a 4.14 GPA and is a three-year member of the National Honor Society. Outside of school, she also enjoys expressing her artistic abilities in painting and drawing, as well as designing and sewing clothing. Bella’s post-graduation plans are to attend Northern Michigan University to pursue a degree in Business, while also finding opportunities to travel the world.

David Eberhard is a senior at MSHS and is coming off of a successful final season as a member of the MSHS Varsity Boys Basketball Team.

David is a four-year member of the boys basketball program at MSHS and two-year member of the varsity team. After playing an unsung hero role on last year’s district championship and regional finalist team, David was a leader within this year’s squad and helped guide the team to another winning season. At season’s end, David was named to the All-U.P. Second Team and All-Great Northern Conference First Team.

During the fall season, David excelled on the football field as a wide receiver for the MSHS Varsity Football Team. Over the course of the season, David accumulated 37 receptions for 607 total yards with 8 touchdowns. His play on the field earned him All-U.P. First Team and All-Great Northern Conference First Team honors.

In the classroom, David owns a 3.52 cumulative GPA to make him a regular on the honor roll as well as a member of the National Honor Society. David also demonstrated a commitment to service by assisting with various fundraising initiatives organized by the Marquette Gridiron Club to provide essential funding for the MSHS football program.

Outside of school, David enjoys going to the beach, spending time outdoors and playing video games. Upon graduating from MSHS as a member of the Class of 2022, David plans to attend Michigan Tech University and pursue a degree in Software Engineering.

Football Home Game Protocol for Spectators

Football Home Game Protocol for Spectators

The 2020 football season will offer some unique circumstances and some less than ideal conditions, but fortunately also provides us with the opportunity to give our student-athletes an experience that is positive, competitive, safe and, above all else, fun for everyone involved!

To accomplish our goal of providing this experience to our student-athletes and participating in all of our scheduled contests for the 2020 season, we need the patience and assistance of all of our spectators.  Please remember that this time is all about our students and it’s on us to do our part so that they can get the most out of this season.

Home football games at MSHS this season will take place with limited spectators in the stadium.

Guidelines for Admission and Home Game Operation:

  • Two (2) tickets will be allotted to every football student-athlete and coach (both home and away).  Students must designate the names of their guests on the ticket lists provided to teams at the start of each week.  Lists are then collected after practice on the day prior to the game.  No changes can be made after this time.
  • Two (2) tickets will also be allotted to members of the MSHS Marching Band, MSHS Cheer Team and MSHS Dance Team.
  • Guests will be verified at the ticket gate prior to entry.
  • Face masks are required to be worn at all times by all entering the facility (this includes student-athletes and coaches).  There are no exceptions.
  • No admission will be charged at home games this season, but donations to support our athletics programs are most appreciated.
  • While seated in the stands, fans not residing in the same household are asked to social distance themselves from other spectators.
  • Vehicles are not permitted to park along the fence anywhere surrounding the MSHS Football Stadium.
  • Restrooms will be available.
  • Concession stand will not be open.

Guidelines for Hillside Spectators:

  • Fans are permitted to enjoy games from the MSHS hillside.
  • Parking must be done on the street or in a legal parking spot.  No vehicles are to be parked on the grass.
  • Fans in attendance are encouraged to wear masks and practice safe social distancing from those not residing in the same household.
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption are not permitted.

Alternative Viewing/Listing Options:

  • Through the REDspn program, all home football games will be live streamed through the NFHS Network.  Cost of the NFHS Network is $10.99/month.  Click here for the REDspn page.
  • Radio coverage for all varsity home games is provided by Fox Sports Marquette and can be found on 105.1 and 99.9 FM.

With your help, we can keep ourselves and each other safe while providing our students with the best experience possible this fall.
