Figure Skating Concludes 2020-21 Season at Michigan High School State Championships

Over spring break, the MSHS Figure Skating Team competed at the Michigan High School State Finals that were held in Dearborn, MI.  After a season filled with virtual meets, the in-person format of the state finals as a welcomed positive change for the group to end its season on.

Day 1 of the competition featured the individual events of Artistic, Dance and Freeskate.  MSHS performed very well in each event (top performances listed below) and came away with 56 total points, which was good for fourth place overall (out of 28 teams).  Kalamazoo Area claimed first place with 81 points, followed by Divine Child (77 points), PCEP (83 points), Marquette, and Midland (55 points) to round out the top five.

Top Individual Performances:

  • Cassie Davis – 9th Place Freeskate, 1st Place Dance (State Champion)
  • Samantha Heikkila – 6th Place Artistic, 2nd Place Freeskate
  • Jamie Hendrickson – 5th Place Artistic, 3rd Place Freeskate
  • Paige Hendrickson – 9th Place Dance, 6th Place Freeskate
  • Olivia Klump – 5th Place Freeskate, 1st Place Artistic (State Champion)
  • Addie Ollila – 7th Place Artistic, 5th Place Freeskate
  • Regina Olson – 4th place Dance, 4th Place Freeskate

    Day 2 of the championships featured the team competition.  Again, MSHS competed well on the day to turn in an 11th place finish overall.  Below is the breakdown of the event and how MSHS fared in each category:

  • Jumps – 13th Place – Addie Ollila, Cassie Davis, Paige Hendrickson
  • Moves – 2nd Place – Samantha Heikkila, Paige Hendrickson, Cassie Davis
  • Spins – 13th Place – Jamie Hendrickson, Paige Hendrickson, Samantha Heikkila, Cassie Davis

Yesterday (March 18), the MSHS Figure Skating Team competed in the District Finals, along with Escanaba and Houghton.

Student-athletes competed very well on the day despite the non-traditional format and came away with the following results:

  • MSHS B Team (Cassie Davis, Samantha Heikkila, Jamie Hendrickson, Paige Hendrickson, Addie Ollila):
    • Jumps – 3rd Place
    • Spins – 3rd Place
    • Moves – 1st Place
    • Overall – 19 points – 2nd Place
  • MSHS C Team (Amelia Bouws, Olivia Klumpp, Regina Olson):
    • Jumps – 2nd Place
    • Spins – 1st Place
    • Moves – 2nd Place
    • Overall – 16 points – 2nd Place

The MSHS Figure Skaters will next compete and wrap-up their 2021 season at State Finals in Dearborn, Michigan on March 26-28.

Last week, the MSHS Figure Skating Team competed in their second virtual meet of the season and recently had the results compiled.  Competing teams included Marquette, Escanaba and “host” team, Houghton.

Tryouts for the MSHS Figure Skating Team will be held at Lakeview Arena on Sunday, November 1st at 3:00 p.m.

Figure Skating Captures 2020 U.P. Team Series Championship

The MSHS Redette Skating Team captured the 2020 U.P. Team Series Championship at both the “B Team” and “C Team” levels in the Michigan High School Series on Sunday (February 23).  Other competing teams in the U.P. Team series Escanaba and Houghton.

On Sunday, MSHS hosted the District Championship meet with the MSHS “B Team” taking 2nd Place (1st – Houghton, 3rd – Escanaba) and the “C Team” taking 1st Place (2nd – Houghton, 3rd – Escanaba).

Michigan High School Series is a season-long cumulative point total for the three competitions taking place per district.  2020 U.P. Team Series point totals were:

B Team Results:

  1. Marquette – 19 points
  2. Houghton – 16 points
  3. Escanaba – 10 points

C Team Results:

  1. Marquette – 22 points
  2. Houghton – 12 points
  3. Escanaba – 11 points

The MSHS Figure Skating team traveled to Escanaba on Saturday (1/18/20) to compete in a dual meet against the host Eskymos.

The MSHS Figure Skating Team took first place in the competition with two teams participating.

The Redette “B Team” took 1st in Jumps, Moves and Spins.

The Redette “C Team” took 1st place in Jumps, Moves and Spins.

Due to poor weather conditions, Houghton was not able to make the trip.  Escanaba placed second in all categories.

The team will next be in action when they host the District Finals on Sunday, February 23rd.

Figure Skating Takes First Place in Escanaba

The MSHS Figure Skating team began its 2019-20 season at the Escanaba Invitational, which was held on Sunday, December 8th.

The Redettes performed extremely well with the MSHS “B” Team placing 1st in Spins, 1st in Moves and 2nd in Jumps.  Those results were strong enough to give them 1st Overall.

In addition, the MSHS “C” Team placed 1st in Spins, 1st in Moves and 1st in Jumps to also have them finish in 1st place Overall in that division.

Also competing at the meet were Houghton (2nd place) and Escanaba (3rd place).

2019-20 team members are Mari Davis, Cassie Davis, Kelsey Freeman, Samantha Heikkila, Jamie Hendrickson, Paige Hendrickson, Maddox Holmstrom, Olivia Klumpp and Regina Olson.

Students interested in Winter sports may now register online at hspaytoplay.com.  If you are eligible for Free/Reduced lunch, you may apply for a fee waiver for the District-funded sports only.  Forms for registration, fee waiver, the 2019-20 Handbook, and the Fee Policy are available in the Athletic office or at mshsathletics.com under the “Resources” tab.  Students must have the latest MHSAA Sports Physical form dated on or after 4/15/19 on file to practice or tryout for a sport.
