Varsity Volleyball Places Four On MIVCA All-Region Team

Varsity Volleyball Places Four On MIVCA All-Region Team

Each volleyball season, over 600 players from Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4 are recognized by the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) for their athletic performance on the court.  A maximum of 32 players are selected from each of Michigan’s 19 Regions.  Once a player has been selected as All-Region by varsity coaches, Regions then nominate players to move on to be considered for All-State accolades.

Following voting by varsity volleyball coaches within the Region, MSHS had four of its varsity volleyball student-athletes selected to the 2023 MIVCA Region 1 All-Region Team.  Those student-athletes were:

  • Jaylee Dellies – Junior – Libero
  • Jessica Gooch – Senior – Middle Hitter
  • Roegen Hruska – Junior – Setter
  • Ava Maki – Junior – Outside Hitter

Varsity Volleyball Wraps Up Regular Season With 3-1 Victory At Escanaba

Varsity Volleyball Wraps Up Regular Season With 3-1 Victory At Escanaba

Varsity Volleyball (21-12-2; 6-2 Great Northern Conference)

Marquette 3, Escanaba 1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22)

From MSHS Varsity Volleyball Coach Ann Crandell-Williams:

“A win was a really fun way to end the regular season!  We came out very flat in the first set. Esky reminded us we’d have to work for it. After that, our players got a bit more online with their passing and that gave us more offensive options to work with. There was a lot of chaotic defensive play on both sides of the net which made for a pretty exciting back-and-forth match. I’m proud of our team for pulling it out in the end.”

Subvarsity Scores:

  • Junior Varsity:  Marquette 2, Escanaba 0
  • FreshmanMarquette 2, Escanaba 1

Next Up:

  • With regular season play having concluded, the MSHS Varsity Volleyball team will begin play in the 2023 MHSAA Division 1 Volleyball Tournament when they will travel to the winner of Petoskey/Gaylord on Wednesday, 11/1/23, for a match beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Varsity Volleyball Falls At Kingsford In Battle Of Top GNC Teams, 3-1

Varsity Volleyball (20-12-2; 5-2 Great Northern Conference)

Marquette 1, Kingsford 3 (25-19, 15-25, 23-25, 19-25)

From Coach Crandell-Williams:

“Kingsford is a tough team! I think we had a fairly good game, but we just weren’t able to pull through in some critical moments. We served really well in the first set. For the rest of the match, there were aspects of our game that shined at different points, but we were just not able to pull all of it together at the same time to keep the momentum going. This team has a strong core of juniors, and I hope they feel motivated to push for another crack at the GNC title next season. We still have Escanaba next Tuesday and we’re looking forward to that match.”

Varsity Volleyball (20-11-2; 5-1 Great Northern Conference)

Marquette 3, Gladstone 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-14)

From Coach Crandell-Williams:

“It was a great night to honor our six seniors, and the team put on a good show for the crowd. As usual, serving and defense did it for us, but we also had some really strong offensive performances from several players. Our team has really improved at being scrappy defensively and recycling a lot of balls so we can put it away the next play. That should help us as we move into our last couple of conference matches and into district play.”

  • Junior Varsity:  Marquette 0, Gladstone 0
  • Freshman:  Marquette 2, Gladstone 1

“Our overall gameplay in this match was something to be proud of. Our team’s energy was good and they were very consistent in all aspects of their game. They stayed consistent with the mental game, even when we had a tough time getting out of a rotation in the first set. I continue to love the way they support each other. We served tough, and continue to push at being offensively aggressive, even when we are out of system, and pushing our offensive capacity when we are in system. We plan to continue to stay focused and work toward improvement as we approach our remaining matches this season.”

Varsity Volleyball (17-10-2; 2-1 Great Northern Conference)

Marquette 3, Gwinn 0 (25-18, 25-8, 25-13)

From Coach Crandell-Williams:

“It’s always fun to win at home, and everyone was able to contribute tonight. Our athletes served tough again and that set the stage for the match. We’ve been working on taking smart but tough swings and going hard after every ball. There were a few great defensive plays where they just didn’t give up, and watching that growth is my favorite part as a coach. I’m proud of them and am excited to stay at it in the gym as we work through the second half of the season.”
