Elena Henry and Tucker Welch Selected As December Student-Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Elena Henry (girls swimming & diving) and Tucker Welch (ice hockey) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for December 2023.

Elena Henry Elena is part of this year’s senior class at MSHS and is a four-year member of the MSHS Girls Swimming & Diving program.

For the past four years, Elena has and continues to be a key member of the MSHS Girls Swim & Dive Team. She brings valuable experience to this year’s team after having been part of two MHSAA U.P. Championship teams (2022-23, 2021-22) and one MHSAA U.P. Runner-Up team (2020-21). With already having turned in multiple MHSAA U.P. Finals qualifying times this season, Elena is looking to cap her impressive career that already has her as a three-time All-U.P. Team honoree and two-time U.P. Champion (2022-23; 200 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay). In all, she comes into this season as a 10-time medalist at the MHSAA U.P. Swimming & Diving Finals.

In the classroom, Elena owns an impressive cumulative GPA of 4.07 and is a member of both the honor roll and National Honor Society.  Outside of school, Elena performs as a member of the MSHS Symphony Orchestra where she earned the Outstanding Soloist Award at the 2023 Solo & Ensemble Festival.  She also serves as director of the “Lauri’s Angels” gift drive at MSHS and volunteers at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans.  To round things out, Elena was named MSHS “Student of the Week” for November 27-December 1 and previously represented MSHS at the 2023 MHSAA Sportsmanship Summit.

Upon graduating from MSHS, Elena plans on attending Northern Michigan University beginning in Fall 2024 to pursue a degree in Biology on either the Pre-Medicine or Pre-Dental track.

Tucker Welch  is of senior class standing and currently serves as an assistant captain on the 2023-2024 MSHS Varsity Hockey Team.

As one of the leaders on this year’s varsity hockey team, Tucker has been instrumental in helping the team to a 10-2-0 overall record, including a 4-1-0 mark in the Great Lakes Hockey Conference, that has Marquette currently ranked 5th among MHSAA Division 3 schools according to Michigan Hockey Hub. In 12 games this season, Tucker has accumulated 4 goals and 3 assists for 7 points.

In addition to hockey, Tucker also assumed a leadership role as a captain on the 2023 MSHS Varsity Football Team. His work ethic helped the team to a 5-4 overall record (5-1 Big North Conference) and berth in the 2023 MHSAA Division 3 Playoffs. As a running back, he turned in 787 yards and 8 touchdowns off of 127 carries to earn All-U.P. Special Mention and All-Big North Conference Second Team accolades. He was also selected as MSHS’ “Offensive Player of the Year”.

In the classroom, Tucker owns a 3.60 cumulative GPA for a regular spot on the honor roll and active membership in the National Honor Society. Outside of school, Tucker also enjoys fishing as well as volunteering time with Special Olympics powerlifting. Tucker’s post-graduation plans are to continue his athletics career at a college/university that has yet to be decided on while pursuing a degree in Construction Management.
