Kaia Miller and Peter Closner Selected As September Student-Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Kaia Miller (girls tennis) and Peter Closner (football) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for September 2022.

Kaia Miller is a senior at MSHS and is led the MSHS Girls Tennis Team to a much-improved season that culminated in runner-up performances at both the Great Northern Conference Meet and the MHSAA Division 1 U.P. Finals.

The 2022 season marked Kaia’s second consecutive season at #1 Singles for MSHS. At that flight, Kaia compiled an overall record of 13-5. Her season-long performance, coupled with a 2-1 record at the MHSAA Division 1 U.P. Finals to finish as runner-up earned her All-U.P. First Team honors. This is the second straight year in which Kaia has received that accolade.

Outside of the tennis season, Kaia remains busy in extracurricular activities at MSHS. She is a founder of the Spikeball Club and also holds membership in the Environmental Club, HOSA for Future Health Professionals, National Honor Society and Student Council.

Kaia excels in the classroom with a 4.03 cumulative GPA and current enrollment that has her in four Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Outside of school, Kaia enjoys reading, cooking and being outside, particularly going on hikes with her Mom and two dogs.

Kaia’s post-graduation plans are to attend either Michigan State University or Grand Valley State University, where she plans to major in Psychology and also pursue a minor in either Spanish of Environmental/Sustainability Studies.

Peter Closner is in senior class standing at MSHS and is currently having a standout season as a team captain and wide receiver/defensive back on this year’s Varsity Football Team.

Through seven games this season, Peter has been a force on both sides of the football.  As a wide receiver, he has 20 catches for 283 total yards with 8 touchdowns.  He also as 33 rushing yards on two carries.  As a defender, his speed and tenacity have been crucial to getting the team’s defense off the field in key situations.

Peter’s strength as a leader comes from his stoic, never-rattled demeanor and lead-by-example nature. His dedication and commitment to his craft is evident both on the field and off. He is a member of the 1,000 Pound Club in the MSHS Weight Room (bench press/squad/power clean) and also volunteers time on the weekends to assist with Marquette County Youth Football. In addition to football, Peter also participates as a member of the MSHS Varsity Boys Basketball Team.

In the classroom, Peter holds a 3.95 cumulative GPA. Outside of school, he enjoys being outdoors, spending time with friends/family and working at Mares-z-Doats.

Peter is currently dual-enrolled at Northern Michigan University, where he is earning credits towards his Associates Degree and will enter the Lineman Technician program after his 18th birthday. He also has plans to continue his education towards a Bachelor’s Degree while also making his way up to Alaska in the hopes of finding an apprenticeship program to earn his journeyman license.
