Lauren Kurzawa and Marius Grazulis Named December Athletes of the Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Lauren Kurzawa (dance team) and Marius Grazulis (boys basketball) have been selected as the Athletes of the Month for December.

Lauren Kurzawa is a senior at MSHS and is a member of the Dance Team.  Lauren is also a current member of the Redette Varsity Girls Soccer Team and also has athletics experience in the Volleyball, Gymnastics and Swimming & Diving programs.

As a senior leader on the dance team, Lauren looks to lead by example.  Earlier this year, she was named “Most Outstanding Dancer” at the Just for Kix High School Camp, an honor that she also received as a junior.  Throughout the duration of the year, Lauren’s leadership provided much of the groundwork needed for a successful (and fun) season.  This culminated last weekend (January 5) when she, and the rest of the team, achieved a second place finish at the Freedom High School Dance Invitational in Kaukauna, WI.

Academically, Lauren has an impressive 4.13 GPA.  She is a three-year member of the National Honor Society and has received the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for each of her semesters of enrollment.  Lauren is also the current Vice President of the Student Council, where she is a two-year member.  In addition, she is also a four-year member of the Key Club and a three-year member of the Interact Club.

In her free time, Lauren enjoys traveling to dance conventions/competitions, skiing/snowboarding and mountain biking.  Lauren’s post-high school plans are to study engineering at an institution that has yet to be decided.

Marius Grazulis is a senior student at MSHS and is in the midst of a stellar season as a member of the Varsity Boys Basketball Team.  He and the team are off to a great start to the season and currently own a 7-2 record and sit in first place in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) standings.

After earning First Team All-GNC and Second Team All-U.P. honors as a junior, Marius has started his senior season right where he left off.   After the team began its season by winning the Petoskey Invitational, Marius was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.  With Marius’ consistent play and positive team leadership, there will undoubtedly be more accolades coming his way at the end of the season.

Marius also performs at a high level in the classroom, where he owns a 3.93 GPA and has earned Honor Roll status and the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award each semester.  Outside of school and athletics, Marius serves as Secretary of the Interact Club, Student Council Representative and is a member of the National Honor Society.  In addition, Marius was selected as “MSHS Student of the Week” earlier this year as a result of his academic achievement and taking a leadership role in fostering a positive environment within the student spirit section at home athletics events.  For fun, he enjoys golf and playing video games.

In November, Marius signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to attend Grand Valley State University, where he will participate as a member of the Laker Men’s Basketball Team.  He has not yet decided on a program of study.
