Meghan MacPhee and Joe DeMattia Selected As December Student-Athletes Of The Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Meghan MacPhee (girls basketball) and Joe DeMattia (hockey) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for December 2022.

Meghan MacPhee is a senior at MSHS and is in the midst of her final year as a member of the MSHS Varsity Girls Basketball Team.

As the team’s starting forward and one of eight seniors on the team this season, Meghan is having an outstanding season as she leads the team at both ends of the floor. At the halfway point of the season, the Varsity Girls Basketball Team has accumulated a 5-6 overall record with a 2-2 mark in Great Northern Conference (GNC) play.

Through 11 games this season, Meghan has averaged 13.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Her performance on the court in a leadership role this season have made her a standout in the Upper Peninsula Girls Basketball scene. There is no doubt that Meghan will be adding to the All-U.P. Honorable Mention and All-GNC First Team accolades that she earned at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, which also saw the team claim the GNC Championship.

Meghan’s hard work on the court is paralleled by excellence in the classroom as well, where she has an impressive 4.12 cumulative GPA. Her academic success has made her a regular inclusion on the MSHS Honor Roll and member of the National Honor Society. Meghan will be continuing her basketball career at the college level next year and is in the process of finishing up the recruiting process to determine which college/university to attend, where she will look to pursue a degree in Biology.

Joe DeMattia is a senior student at MSHS and is halfway through his final season as a defenseman on the Varsity Hockey Team.

Joe is a rare four-year member of the MSHS Varsity Hockey Team. He was named team captain of this year’s squad based on his experience, leadership and poise during all situations. With his leadership, and that of five other experienced seniors, the team has worked their way to a 9-3-2 overall record at the midpoint of the season with a 5-1-0 mark in the Great Lakes Hockey Conference (GLHC).

In the team’s 14 regular season games this season, Joe has accumulated 1 goal and 5 assists to go along with an impressive +14 plus/minus rating. This comes off of a junior season where Joe tallied 8 goals and 14 assists en route to earning MHSHCA All-State Second Team and All-GLHC Second Team honors. Joe’s years on the MSHS Varsity Hockey Team have resulted in three appearances in the MHSAA State Semifinals and one GLHC Championship.

In the classroom, Joe owns a 3.69 cumulative GPA and is a consistent member of the MSHS Honor Roll. Upon graduating from MSHS this spring, Joe plans to attend Northern Michigan University in the fall with a focus in the College of Business, and will continue his work as a model with the 10 Management Agency.
