Sydney Osborne and Nate Benninger Selected As May Student-Athletes Of The Month

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Sydney Osborne (girls soccer, girls track & field) and Nate Benninger (boys track & field) have been named as the Student-Athletes of the Month for May 2023.

Sydney Osborne is a member of the Class of 2023 and is a dual sport student-athlete in the spring as a member of both the MSHS Varsity Girls Soccer Team and the MSHS Girls Track & Field Team.

Sydney is a four-year member of the Varsity Girls Soccer Team and served as the anchor of a veteran defensive unit for this year’s group. As a team captain this season, she helped guide the squad to another U.P. Championship when they defeated Kingsford in the title game of the U.P. Girls Soccer Tournament on Saturday, 5/20/23. Throughout her career, Sydney has been a consistent driving force for the team coming up with key contributions when they were needed. With her as one of the leaders within the program over the past four years, it is easy to see why her teams have achieved success.

On the track this season, Sydney’s speed has been on display within the sprint events and relays. During the 2023 MHSAA Division 1 Regional Meet that was held in Marquette on Friday, 5/19/23, Sydney turned in a first place finish as part of the 400M Relay Team as well as a second place finish in the 800M Relay. Those finishes were both qualifying performances for the MHSAA U.P. Finals Meet that will be held in Kingsford on 6/3/23.

In the classroom, Sydney owns a 4.01 cumulative GPA which has her included on the MSHS Honor Roll and holding membership in the National Honor Society.

In the Fall of 2022, Sydney signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and participate in the women’s soccer program at Northern Michigan University beginning with the 2023-2024 academic year. While at NMU, she intends on majoring in Biology with a focus in Physiology.

Nate Benninger will be graduating as a member of the Class of 2023 and has been busy this spring finishing out a successful athletics career as a member of the MSHS Boys Track & Field Team.

With a tireless work ethic and the will to constantly improve himself, it is easy to see why Nate is experiencing the success that he is during his senior year. As a senior leader on this year’s track & field team, Nate has helped set the tone for a group that has most recently captured Regional, Great Northern Conference (GNC) and Marquette County championships. At the MHSAA Regional Meet held on 5/19/23, Nate turned in a first place finish in the 400M Relay to go along with runner-up finishes in the 100M, 200M and 800M Relay. He was also Marquette County champion in three events (100M, 400M Relay, 800M Relay).

A two-sport student-athlete at MSHS, Nate served as team captain for the MSHS Varsity Football Team starting at both running back and safety. At season’s end, his on-field performance earned him All-U.P. Honorable Mention and 2021 All-Great Northern Conference First Team honors.
In the classroom, Nate owns a 4.02 cumulative GPA which has him included on the MSHS Honor Roll and National Honor Society. Additionally, his academic reputation saw him recognized with this year’s MSHS Physical Education Departmental Award from the L.G. Kaufman Endowment.

In the February 2023, Nate committed to attend Michigan Technological University beginning with the Fall 2023 semester where he will also participate as a member of the Huskies’ football program. While at MTU, Nate will be pursuing a degree in Exercise Science.
