Varsity Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Superior Central

The MSHS Varsity Baseball team split a doubleheader with Superior Central on Saturday (5/1/21).  After dropping the first game by the score of 19-6, MSHS rebounded nicely in game two and came away with an 8-7 win.

Game 1:  Marquette 6, Superior Central 19

MSHS fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 19-6 loss in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader.  Despite the loss, Marquette did collect seven hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Superior Central had 13 hits on the way to victory.

MSHS was able to put up three runs in the sixth inning during a nice stretch of play.  The rally was led by a single by Peter VandenAvond and a double by Erik Johnson.

Brady Wright pitched in the loss for Marquette . Wright went one and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out four.  MSHS tallied seven hits in the game.  Derek Pederson and Erik Johnson led the way with two hits each.

Game 2:  Marquette 8, Superior Central 7

MSHS nabbed the lead late and held on for an 8-7 victory to earn a split on the day with Superior Central.  The game was tied at seven with MSHS batting in the bottom of the sixth when a wild pitch allowed for the game winning run to come across the plate.

Justin Wenk led the Marquette to victory on the pitcher’s mound.  The righty lasted six and a third innings, allowing three hits and seven runs while striking out seven.  Peter VandenAvond threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.

MSHS tallied eight hits in the game.  Derek Perderson, Jacob Knauss, and Brady Wright each collected two hits to lead MSHS.  Peter VandenAvond led Marquette with three stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with 12 stolen bases in the game.
