Varsity Boys Soccer Falls To Kingsford In Shootout To Finish Second At U.P. Tournament

Varsity Boys Soccer (11-5)

The MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer team hosted the U.P. Boys Soccer Tournament on Saturday, 10/7/23, at the Kaufman Sports Complex in Marquette.  Teams competing in the event included MHSAA postseason eligible teams from Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie.

After defeating Iron Mountain in the semifinal game by a score of 6-1, MSHS fell to Kingsford in the championship game that was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation before the Flivvers prevailed in a shootout 3-2.

Game 1 – Semifinal:  Marquette 6, Iron Mountain 1

  • First Half Goal Scorers:   Seamus Waite from Dixon Poggi (via corner kick); Canyon Medina from Ethan Sandstrom; Jack Sysko from Finn Stiles
  • Second Half Goal Scorers:   Kaleb Chipelewski from Henry Wood; Seamus Waite from Charlie Hrodey; Oscar Hill from Seamus Waite (via Indigo Catalano free kick)
  • In Net:  Keeper Edan Hautamaki earned the win in goal for MSHS.

Game 2 – Championship:  Marquette 1, Kingsford 1 (KHS wins shootout 3-2)

  • First Half Goal Scorers:  No goals scored
  • Second Half Goal Scorers Henry Wood (unassisted)
  • Shootout:  Kingsford scored on kickers one, three and four while Marquette scored on kickers two (Ben Wilson) and four (Indigo Catalano).
  • In Net:  Keeper Edan Hautamaki turned away four shots during regulation while also stopping two attempts during the shootout.

Senior Night:

Prior to the game, 10 members of the Class of 2024 were honored as they were introduced to the crowd and accompanied on the field by their parents/guardians.  Congratulations to these boys soccer student-athletes and the success that they have achieved and contributions made while playing for MSHS!

Next Up:

  • The MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer Team finishes the 2023 regular season with an 11-5 overall record.
  • The team has earned the #1 seed in district play for the 2023 MHSAA Division 2 Tournament and will host the winner of a quarterfinal match-up between Cadillac/Alpena on Tuesday, 10/17/23.  That game will have a start time of 5:00 p.m. from the Kaufman Sports Complex.
