Varsity Boys Soccer Goes 1-2 At Petoskey Northmen Classic To Open 2023 Season

The MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer Team (1-2) traveled downstate on Friday (8/18/23) to compete in the Petoskey Northmen Classic.  After downing district opponent Petoskey 1-0 to open the event, MSHS dropped close contests to Lake Orion (2-4) and Oxford (2-3) to finish the day.

Game 1:  Marquette 1, Petoskey 0

  • First Half:  Neither team was able to solve the other in the first half and the schools entered the second stanza deadlocked at 0-0.
  • Second Half:  Canyon Medina (senior) got the lone tally in the match off of a pass coming from from Charlie Hrodey (freshmen) to give MSHS the 1-0 advantage that they would hold until the game’s conclusion. Keeper Edan Hautamaki (junior) faced two shots in the first half and three shots in the second half in net for Marquette.
  • From MSHS Head Coach Dan Salmon“Last year in this tournament we started a little slow so we wanted to get up on these guys early. We had a few good chances in the first half and finally got one in the net in the second half. After just five practices, I was happy with the result in this one.”

Game 2:  Marquette 2, Lake Orion 4

  • First Half:  Kaleb Chipelewski (junior) scored the game’s first goal assisted by Charlie Hrodey to give MSHS a 1-0 lead.  Just 30 seconds later, Lake Orion leveled the score at 1-1.  Canyon Medina earned his second goal of the day from a Jack Sysko (junior) corner kick to put MSHS back in front 2-1.  Lake Orion then answered with a two goal rally to take a 3-2 lead into the break.
  • Second Half:  Lake Orion added to their lead in the second half with a penalty kick conversion.  That goal was the lone marker in the half for the 4-2 final score. Edan Hautamaki faced 9 shots in the first half and 8 in the second half.
  • From MSHS Head Coach Dan Salmon“I think the boys were a little tired after the intense first game and it was showing in this game. All of the games are back to back and there’s not a lot of time for recovery. Early on we were doing well but Lake Orion really dialed up the intensity in the second half.”

Game 3:  Marquette 2, Oxford 3

  • First Half:  Charlie Hrodey put MSHS in front when he scored a goal assisted by Kaleb Chipelewski.
  • Second Half:  Kaleb Chipelewski doubled Marquette’s advantage at 2-0 after he converted a penalty kick.  Oxford then scored three unanswered goals over the next 15 minutes for the win, one of which was a penalty kick.  MSHS keeper Edan Hautamaki faced three shots in the first half and stopped a penalty kick while facing seven shots in the second half.
  • From MSHS Head Coach Dan Salmon“This loss stings a bit. We were in control of the game and let it slip through our fingers. We knew Oxford was good and a couple bad bounces that didn’t go our way was the difference in the game.”
