MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer (8-2-1)

Marquette 2, Kingsford 1

The MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer team hosted Kingsford this evening (9/6/22) at the Kaufman Sports Complex and came away with a 2-1 victory.

Kingsford opened the game with all the momentum that culminated in gaining a penalty kick goal early in the first half.  That 1-0 Flivver advantage held until halftime.

At the 10-minute mark of the second half,  Marquette’s Noah Bell headed in a corner kick from the foot of teammate Ezra Pickard to equalize the game at 1-1.

Near the 20-minute mark of the second half, Max Dawson then converted a penalty kick to give MSHS the 2-1 advantage that proved to be the difference in the contest.

Goalkeeper Edan Hautamaki faced 10 shots in net with Isaac Johnson also tending net for a few minutes while Hautamaki was injured.

From MSHS Head Coach, Dan Salmon:

• “Kingsford showed up ready to play.  They took control of the game right from the start and held the momentum most of the first half.  I think our boys were a bit surprised at the intensity Kingsford came with.  At halftime we settled them down and got back to our game plan and things went our way in the second half.  Our outside defender Leo Vartainenen made a great goal line save after our keeper made a diving save but couldn’t get to the rebound.  That was probably the play of the game.”

• The Varsity Boys Soccer team will remain at home later this week to host Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday, September 8 for a contest beginning at 5:00 p.m. from the Kaufman Sports Complex.
