The MSHS Varsity Volleyball team began the 2023 season when they traveled to Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday (8/19/23) to compete in the Sault Invitational.  After earning a 2-2 record through pool play, Marquette advanced to the event’s 4-team bracket play and defeated host Sault Ste. Marie in the semifinals before falling to Petoskey in the final.  The team finished the day with a record of 3-3.

• Marquette 0, Petoskey 2 (7-25, 13-25)
• Marquette 2, Rogers City 0 (25-23, 25-13)
• Marquette 2, St. Ignace 0 (25-18, 27-26)
• Marquette 0, Houghton 2 (19-25, 20-25)

Bracket Play Semifinals:

• Marquette 2, Sault Ste. Marie 1 (25-20, 19-25, 15-10)

Bracket Play Championship:

• Marquette 0, Petoskey 2 (15-25, 10-25)

From MSHS Head Coach, Ann Crandell-Williams:

• “I’m so proud of the day this team had!  We have several first-year varsity players, and it took a few matches for them to shake off the nerves and get their feet under them.  They showed improvement throughout the day, and by the end they looked much more like the team I’ve been seeing in practice.  Petoskey is a strong team, and it was great for our team to see the kind of competition they’ll be facing in districts.  I was really proud of them for their semi-final win against the Sault, and hopefully it will give them confidence when we go back this week to face them in a dual match.”

• MSHS will travel back to Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday, August 23, for a traditional format match-up.  Start time for the JV and Freshman matches is 5:30 p.m., with the varsity match to follow at 7:00 p.m.
