Late last week, the Michigan Associated Press announced the Division 3-4 All-State football team, which is selected by a statewide panel of sports writers. MSHS had four of its student-athletes achieve this high honor, led by First Team All-State defensive back Desmond Mullen and Second Team All-State wide receiver Kameron Karp.
Mullen, a junior, is the only Marquette area player to earn the lofty First Team All-State selection after he was also named the Defensive Player of the Year in All-Upper Peninsula balloting by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Mullen was named to the All-U.P. “Dream Team” in two capacities, defensive back and as return specialist.
Karp, a senior, was named a Second Team All-State player at wide receiver after he matched Mullen on his side of the ball as Offensive Player of the Year in the U.P. Karp was also an All-U.P. “Dream Team” selection at wide receiver.
Rounding out the all-state honors for MSHS were a pair of Marquette juniors, Austin Ridl (quarterback) and Chris Ricker (lineman), who both received honorable mention nods. These accolades cap an impressive year for both student-athletes with Ridl also being named as quarterback for the All-U.P. “Dream Team” and Ricker receiving All-U.P. Honorable Mention honors.
