Varsity Boys Soccer Falls To Fruitport In Tightly Contested MHSAA Regional Semifinal, 2-0

Varsity Boys Soccer (13-6)

MHSAA Division 2 Regional Semifinal – Marquette 0, Fruitport 2

On Tuesday evening, the MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer team took on Fruitport in an MHSAA Division 2 Regional Semifinal contest that was hosted by Gaylord High School.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie at the end of 40:00 minutes of first half action.  Roughly three minutes into the second half of play, lightning in the area forced play to be delayed for roughly 90 minutes.

Once play resumed, the teams continued the tightly contested match with both teams displaying quality performances on the pitch.  Marquette’s defensive back line of Hunter Sandstrom, Indigo Catalano and Easton Zivnoska held strong throughout the game to counter the speed and skill of Fruitport’s forwards.

Fruitport was able to take a 1-0 lead with 11:00 to go in the game and added a second tally shortly afterwards for the 2-0 decision.

  • First Half Goal Summary:  No Goals Scored
  • Second Half Goal Summary:  Fruitport – Jorge Burgos-Yack (MSHS – 0; FHS – 1);  Fruitport – Ryder Merkins (MSHS – 0; FHS – 2)

From MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer Head Coach Dan Salmon:

  • “Our game plan was working and we felt good right up until the lightning delay. We were playing a fast paced, heavy press attack which was starting to give us offensive chances. Once the game restarted, we just couldn’t get back to where we were. This was another one of those games that was unprecedented, start to finish was almost 4 hours after our nearly 3 hour game in the district championship on Saturday.”
