Varsity Boys Soccer Goes 3-0 At Suttons Bay Invite To Take Tournament Title

MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer (8-3)

The MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer Team traveled downstate for the second time this season on Saturday (9/16/23) to compete in the Suttons Bay Invitational.

After defeating district opponent Gaylord 1-0 to open the event, MSHS then dropped Harbor Springs (2-0) to advance to the event’s championship game where they were victorious over Kalkaska (6-1) to claim the tournament title.

Game 1:  Marquette 1, Gaylord 0

  • First Half Scoring:  Charlie Hrodey from Dixon Poggi 
  • Second Half Scoring:  No goals scored.
  • In Net:  Keeper Edan Hautamaki faced one shot in the first half.
  • From MSHS Head Coach Dan Salmon“The Gaylord game turned out to be a defensive game. We controlled a lot of the play in the first half but Gaylord started gaining control in the second half even though they did not get a shot on net. Our midfielders did well in this game.”

Game 2:  Marquette 2, Harbor Springs 0

  • First Half Scoring:  Indigo Catalano via free kick
  • Second Half Scoring:  Charlie Hrodey from Seamus Waite 
  • In Net:  Keeper Edan Hautamaki faced four shots in the first half and three in the second half for a game total of seven saves.
  • From MSHS Head Coach Dan Salmon“Once we scored the free kick on Harbor Springs, the game turned in our favor and we controlled play for most of it.  Freshman Charlie Hrodey really stepped up and had a good weekend.”

Championship Game:  Marquette 6, Kalkaska 1

  • First Half Scoring:  Kaleb Chipelewski via penalty kick; Henry Wood from Indigo Catalano and Ethan Sandstrom; Charlie Hrodey from Kaleb Chipelewski and Miles Hill; Kaleb Chipelewski from Andy Brunswick
  • Second Half Scoring:  Canyon Medina from Kaleb Chipelewski; Ben Wilson via penalty kick
  • In Net:  Keeper Edan Hautamaki allowed one goal on two shots during the contest.
  • From MSHS Head Coach Dan Salmon“Upon getting to the championship game, the team really responded and they were hungry for the win. Winning this game and the whole tournament was a complete team effort.”
