Varsity Boys Soccer Outlasts Petoskey In 11-Round Shootout To Win MHSAA District Championship

Varsity Boys Soccer (13-5)

MHSAA Division 2 District Championship – Marquette 1, Petoskey 1 (Marquette wins shootout, 8-7)

On Saturday afternoon, the MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer team continued their postseason run when they hosted Petoskey in the MHSAA Division 2 District Championship in front of a raucous crowd at the Kaufman Sports Complex.

Marquette got on the scoresheet early when Ethan Sandstrom found the back of the net in the second-minute of the contest off of an Easton Zivnoska pass.  MSHS held the 1-0 advantage

Shortly into the second half, Petoskey leveled the game when Finnley Yurek scored a goal that was assisted by Daniel Howard.  With five-minutes remaining in regulation, Petoskey received a penalty kick after a foul in the box but were denied by MSHS goalkeeper Edan Hautamaki, who had 10 saves in regulation.  With the game still deadlocked at 1-1 after 80:00 of play, the teams would need extra time to determine a winner.

Petoskey and Marquette then battled through two 10-minute overtime periods before shootout procedures commenced.  With the match still equal at 3-3 after the first five rounds of the shootout, teams then alternated shooters in a sudden-death format until a victor could be declared.  After Hautamaki stopped his fourth kick of the shootout in the 11th round, Ben Wilson then calmly slid a shot past the Petoskey keeper for an 8-7 shootout win that earned Marquette the 2023 MHSAA District Championship.
