Varsity Boys Soccer Goes 2-0-1 At Alpena Huron Shores Invite

The MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer Team traveled downstate over the weekend (9/24/22) to compete in the Alpena Huron Shores Invite.  The team finished the event in third place, despite not dropping a contest during the day and finishing with a 2-0-1 record.

Game 1:  Marquette 1, Traverse City Christian 1

Marquette’s Henry Wood (left in white) advances the ball against Traverse City Christian.
  • In Game 1, MSHS played in the rain against Traverse City Christian to a 1-1 tie.
  • After a scoreless first half of action, Traverse City Christian scored with four minutes to go in the game.
  • Following the TC Christian go-ahead goal, Marquette’s Ezra Pickard tied the game with two minutes to go with a goal assisted by Easton Zivnoska.
  • Goaltender Edan Hautamaki faced a total of seven shots in the contest.
  • From MSHS Head Coach Dan Salmon“Traverse City Christian is ranked number 10 in division three and we told the team even though it was a round robin game, this would look more like the championship game. We had several chances to score but just couldn’t find the back of the net. I felt we were the better team and controlled play most of the time.”

Game 2:  Marquette 1, Grayling 0

Marquette’s Jack DeMerse moves the ball past a Grayling defender.
  • In the second game of the day, Marquette faced Grayling and won 1-0.
  • After another 0-0 halftime score, Max Dawson scored a goal with four minutes remaining in the game that was assisted by Mason Bocklund.
  • Edan Hautamaki had three saves in the game, including a key stop on a penalty kick in the first half.
  • From MSHS Head Coach Dan Salmon“Edan’s save against the penalty kick kept us in the game and was the play of the game.  Due to tiebreakers in the tournament format, we needed to score four goals to advance to the championship game but Grayling played us tough.”

Game 3:  Marquette 4, Cheboygan 1

Marquette’s Mason Bocklund, red and left, clears a ball from the defensive end versus Cheboygan.
  • In the final game of the day, Marquette beat Cheboygan 4-1.
  • After Cheboygan scored the game’s first goal at the 20-minute mark, Marquette’s Max Dawson tied the game with five minutes to go in the first half with assists coming from Ezra Pickard and Evan Sysko.
  • Marquette scored three goals in the second half which included Dawson from Pickard, Pickard unassisted, and Henry Wood from Dawson.
  • Edan Hautamaki faced four shots in the first half and three in the second half.
  • From MSHS Head Coach Dan Salmon“Our defense played exceptionally well in this game and the offense put the ball in the net when we needed it. A really good team effort in the win.”
