Varsity Boys Soccer Tops Lakeland Union In Shootout

MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer (12-2-1)

Marquette 3, Lakeland Union 2 (MSHS Wins Shootout 4-3)

The MSHS Varsity Boys Soccer Team traveled to Minocqua, Wisconsin on Saturday (9/17/22) to take part in a two-game showcase hosted by Lakeland Union High School.

Marquette took on the host Thunderbirds in the first contest of the day.  After battling to a 2-2 deadlock at the end of regulation, MSHS earned a 4-3 shootout victory.

Marquette’s Max Dawson scored the game’s first goal off a pass from goaltender Edan Hautamaki for a 1-0 MSHS lead.  That margin held through the remainder of the first half.

After Lakeland Union tied the game at 1-1,  Indigo Catalano put Marquette back ahead with a penalty kick.

With roughly seven minutes to go in the game, Lakeland Union again knotted the contest to force the deciding shootout.

In the five-round shoot out, Lakeland Union took leads at 1-0 and 2-1 before Hautamaki made a save in the third round to bring the shoot out level at 2-2 heading into round four.  With the team’s still equal at 3-3 after round four, Marquette’s Evan Sysko buried his attempt with the subsequent Lakeland Union player hitting the crossbar to give MSHS the win.

Other goal scorers in the shoot out for Marquette included Dawson, Andy Brunswick and Henry Wood.

Hautamaki faced five shots in the first half and three in the second half.

From MSHS Head Coach, Dan Salmon:

  • “Our team played well. Lakeland has a similar playing style to us and I feel we were very equally matched. We had the same outcome last year so it is nice to be on the winning side of these shootouts.”
